Mineral sunscreens: why choose zinc oxide?

Sunscreens contain either mineral or chemical filters. We explain how they differ and why mineral filters are often recommended for sensitive skin.

Sun protection is the most important step in your daily skincare routine, because UV rays are the main cause of premature skin ageing and pigmentation spots. But sunscreens vary a lot. One of the main differences is which UV filters they use.

In short

  • Mineral filters, such as zinc oxide, stay on the surface of the skin and protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • They are usually gentler on sensitive skin and work immediately.
  • Apply the cream generously and reapply every 2 hours.

Mineral and chemical filters

Mineral (physical) filters – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They stay on the surface of the skin and form a protective layer that blocks UV rays.

Chemical (organic) filters are absorbed into the top layer of the skin and absorb UV rays, converting them into heat.

Why zinc oxide?

  • Broad-spectrum protection – zinc oxide protects against both UVB (sunburn) and UVA (ageing) rays;
  • Suitable for sensitive skin – mineral filters usually irritate the skin less often, which is why they are often recommended for sensitive skin and children;
  • Works immediately – no need to wait for it to absorb;
  • Suitable for natural cosmetics – the COSMOS standard only allows mineral UV filters.

What about the white cast?

The most common drawback of mineral creams is a whitish tint on the skin. That is why formulas with mineral pigments (iron oxides) are created – they give a light tint and help avoid white streaks.

How to use sunscreen correctly

  • apply generously – a thin layer protects much less than stated on the packaging;
  • reapply every 2 hours, as well as after swimming, sweating or towelling;
  • use it every day, not just on holiday – UVA rays penetrate even through clouds;
  • remember that no sunscreen provides 100% protection – seek shade at midday, and keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.
