Both mean that the product has been checked by an independent certification body \u2013 not just that the manufacturer called it \u201cnatural\u201d itself. But there is an important difference between them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-summary\">\n<p class=\"article-summary__title\">In short<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both certifications mean the cosmetics have been checked by an independent body, such as ECOCERT.<\/li>\n<li>COSMOS NATURAL \u2013 ingredients of natural origin and environmentally friendly production.<\/li>\n<li>COSMOS ORGANIC \u2013 even stricter: at least 95% of plant ingredients are organic, and at least 20% of the whole product is organic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<section class=\"article-section\">\n<h2>Why do you need a certification at all?<\/h2>\n<p>In the European Union, the word \u201cnatural\u201d is not legally defined for cosmetics. This means that even a product with only a few percent of natural ingredients can be called \u201cnatural\u201d. Certification solves this problem: it is based on clear rules, and compliance is checked by auditors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COSMOS<\/strong> (COSMetic Organic and Natural Standard) is an international standard for natural and organic cosmetics, created by Europe\u2019s leading certification organisations, including the French <strong>ECOCERT<\/strong>.
